Choosing the right kind of soap for people with dry skin types

Skin dryness is fairly a common problem, but overcoming it can be an excruciating task. While it might be caused by a variety of reasons like environment, weather, genetics or pre-existing skin conditions, the right kind of soap can help control the skin’s dryness and counter the effects of it if needed. So without further ado, here are some tips to choose the right kind of soap for dry skin.

Select something oily

Our skin has special glands that produce sebum, the natural oil that keeps our skin moist and lubricated. It accomplishes this by trapping the moisture escaping from the skin’s pores. When this oil barrier is damaged, water evaporates easily causing what we call dry skin. This can be countered by using natural soaps made of oil-rich ingredients like cocoa, olive oil, aloe vera, shea, avocado, etc. Other options are natural soaps with an abundance of honey or coconut milk. These soaps can prevent the skin from losing its water content, keeping it naturally moisturised and hydrated.

Avoid synthetics

As much as looking for ingredients that hydrate the skin is important, so is knowing what to avoid in order to not worsen already dry skin. Synthetic colors, dyes, alcohol are all major red flags for skin dryness, and soaps with such substances exacerbate the problems rather than relieve them. Added fragrances can also mess with the skin - surprising but true. Many soaps are loaded with synthetic scents and chemicals to appeal to the senses, and it's important to identify and avoid these in case of dry skin.

Some extra steps

Apart from the right soap, taking some extra care of dry skin might go a long way in keeping it lustrous and healthy. Dry skin worsens abnormally with winter, and keeping it hydrated using oils rich in linoleic acid like grapeseed, sunflower, hemp, etc, can help with this. Using a moisturizer rich in natural ingredients immediately after washing your skin can help keep the moisture trapped in the skin. Exfoliation of the skin is also equally important, as the build up of dead dry skin cells can pave the way to more irritations.

In conclusion, skin dryness is something that can be effectively countered by choosing the right soaps and with some delicate care. Dry skin might have been a lifelong issue, but you definitely don’t have to live with it.
