Be tough on the ’ruff (Or, how to manage dandruff)

Dandruff is a fairly common problem. While there is no permanent way to be rid of dandruff, using an anti-dandruff shampoo does help.

How does anti-dandruff shampoo work?

At a very basic level, an anti-dandruff shampoo is like any shampoo - it cleanses the scalp and hair. What makes them a speciality shampoo is the ingredients. Typically they may contain either salicylic acid (which helps clear dead skin cells from the scalp), or selenium sulfide (which helps slow the growth of skin cells on the scalp) or zinc pyrithione (which targets dandruff causing fungus).

Properly used, an anti-dandruff shampoo helps clear the existing dandruff flakes, leaving the scalp clear. While consistent use helps alleviate the condition, an anti-dandruff shampoo reduces the appearance of dandruff - a common trope used in advertisements that show dandruff disappear instantly with the use of the advertised shampoo. In reality this effect is true of any anti-dandruff shampoo.

Most anti-dandruff shampoos help by accomplishing one of two things:

  • They infuse much-needed nutrients and moisture into the scalp

  • They treat the scalp with active ingredients and restore the natural pH balance of the scalp - something not all shampoos do

How does one manage dandruff?

Two words - hydration and nutrition. Most dandruff shampoo products contain additional vitamins that are beneficial to the scalp. Normal shampoos can leave the scalp parched while cleansing it - this sort of cleansing actually exacerbates the condition. Which is why anti-dandruff shampoos contain ingredients that moisturise the scalp to some extent.

Many anti-dandruff shampoos contain essential oils for the hair, (like Vitamin B and E) that help nourish the scalp - the other important factor in fighting dandruff. At Haeal, we have shampoos that are enriched with nature-based ingredients, and can successfully provide both ingredients, such as the Mystical Tea Tree Oil Shampoo for Anti-inflammatory Effect, the Amazing Vitamin C Shampoo for Antibacterial Protection, and the Supercool Charcoal Shampoo for Deep Cleansing.

It’s all in the active ingredients!

The bulk of anti-dandruff shampoos contain active chemicals that work to temporarily restore the pH balance of the scalp. Given that shampoos vary in terms of the active compounds they include and the potency of the active substances, the pH balance benefit of over-the-counter brands does not typically last very long.

All anti-dandruff shampoos, on the other hand, are not created equal, and it is advisable to use more than just one type in order to achieve the best results.

The use of ingredients like selenium sulphide and zinc pyrithione is prevalent in anti-dandruff shampoos, and these ingredients can be purchased over-the-counter too.

Typically required to be prescribed, shampoos with more potent chemicals (like Nizoral or ketoconazole) can help achieve longer-lasting outcomes. And being potent, these speciality or medicated shampoos need to be used less frequently.

Anti-dandruff shampoos can be quite effective in the fight against dandruff, though picking one that works for you can leave you scratching your head.

One easy solution is to head on to, and choose from our range of anti-dandruff shampoos, infused with nature-based ingredients.
